Gonojagoron Mancha brought out a procession of joy in Dhaka today after Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam was handed death by a war crimes tribunal.

“We are pleased on the verdict,” Mancha faction spokesperson Imran H Sarker said. “This verdict reflects the desire of the people and all the victims of the atrocities of 1971.”

The Mancha faction marched through Shahbagh in the capital and Dhaka University premises after the verdict was pronounced.

Azharul was handed the death penalty on three charges of genocide, mass killing and crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.

He was also sentenced to 25 and five years imprisonment on two other charges as the International Crimes Tribunal-1 found him guilty for five out of six charges.

The Jamaat leader was charged with torture, looting, arson, abduction, rape, mass killing and conspiracy to kill unarmed civilians in Rangpur.
