Get rid of money-whitening scope: TIB

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) today called upon the government not to have scope for whitening money in the upcoming budget, terming such privilege unconstitutional, unethical and discriminatory.

It also urged the government to ensure more transparency and openness in budgetary allocations, including that of the defence, and create space for greater discussion in and outside parliament.

TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said they were happy to learn the government position of not allowing to whiten black money.

“We reiterate our call not to bow down to any pressures from any vested quarters. This opportunity contradicts the section 20(2) of the constitution,” he said in a media statement.

“Such unethical scope actually rewards irregularities and corruption and discourage honesty. At the same time, it presents the government as the protector and helping actor of corruption,” Iftekharuzzaman said.
