Fulgazi upazila bypoll today: Minar among key contenders

By-election to the post of Fulgazi Upazila Parishad chairman will be held today.

The post fell vacant following the murder of upazila chairman Ekramul Haque Ekram in Feni town on May 20.

As many as 76780 voters are expected to cast their votes through 30 polling centres in the upazila. All the 30 centres have been declared 'risky'.

Local BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, also the main accused in Ekramul Haque murder case, and Fulgazi upazila AL General Secretary Abdul Alim are the key contenders in the election.

Ekramul Haque, also the president of Awami League upazila unit, was shot and burnt to death in his car by a gang of criminals near Bilashi Cinema Hall in Academy area of the district town on May 20.

Rezaul Haque Jasim, brother of the slain upazila chairman, filed a murder case with Feni Model Police Station on the day, accusing 30 to 35 people, including Minar.

On May 27, DB police arrested Minar, convenor of Feni district unit of Tanti Dal, from Kachukhet area near Dhaka Cantonment.
