Significant progress in probe

Claims DMP boss on Gulshan attack

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia yesterday claimed to have made significant progress in the investigation into the Gulshan attack.

“We have unearthed the Holey Artisan mystery. Arresting all [culprits] is a matter of time now.” he said while talking to journalists at his office in the capital.

But such things (making the arrests) cannot be done overnight or within a given time, he said.

He claimed that their investigation found clues about the attackers and how the attack was carried out. “We are trying to arrest them.”

The DMP chief stressed the importance of landlords providing police with detailed information about the tenants.

“Owners of the two flats didn't keep any information about their tenants.  We are investigating to find out whether they did it intentionally,” he said.

Recently, two persons were arrested for allegedly renting out their flats in Mirpur and Bashundhara Residential Area to the suspected Gulshan attackers and withholding information about their tenants from the police.

Asaduzzaman then warned of taking legal action against all city landlords if they did not provide tenants' information to the local police stations.

He also criticised some television talk-show participants for raising questions about various police actions.

“It is our legal and constitutional duty to take action against those who disrupt security [measures]… If somebody gets disappointed to see us performing this duty, I will say that they are the patrons [of criminals].”

On July 1, a group of armed terrorists stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery at Gulshan in the capital, killing 20 hostages, mostly foreigners. Two police officials were also killed.
