Temperature likely to drop further

The weather office forecast that the mercury may fall further for a few days and the cold spell might last until the first week of February.

The forecast comes when fog has been disrupting ferry services and causing long tailbacks on the highways. 

The weathermen, however, said this spell could be the last of this winter.

"The temperature may fall in a day or two and last till the first week of February," said Bazlur Rashid, meteorologist of Dhaka Met office.

Dhaka city's lowest temperature this winter was recorded at 11.8 degrees Celsius yesterday, while the country's lowest temperature was recorded at 9.7 degrees Celsius in Sreemangal, he said.

In this winter, the country's lowest temperature was recorded at 6.3 degrees Celsius in Tentulia of Panchagarh.

In the forecast, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department predicted that the weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country.

Moderate to thick fog may occur over the country between midnight and noon, said a Met office release yesterday.

Ferry services resumed on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route after being suspended for four and a half hours due to fog.

More than 600 vehicles were stranded at both the ends to cross the Padma.

Mohammad Faysal, BIWTC assistant manager (Trade) at Shimulia ghat, said they suspended the ferry services at 2:30am and resumed at 7:00am.
