Lawmakers laud Bangabandhu
Lawmakers from both treasury and opposition benches yesterday told parliament that Bangabandhu was the world's one of the few statesmen who earned fame in his own country and made a supreme sacrifice for the country's people.
Highlighting various initiatives taken by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as a political leader before and after the country's independence, they said he couldn't turn Bangladesh into "Golden Bengal" as dreamt by himself, but he gave the shape to build the country as "Sonar Bangla".
The MPs were speaking in the House on the resolution tabled by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in parliament on Monday.
The PM placed the resolution under rule-147 of the Rules of Procedure to pay tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman through holding a special discussion on his colourful political life, activities, and philosophy.
In the resolution, the premier said the dreamer and architect of independent Bangladesh, the undisputed great leader of the Bangalees and the Father of the Nation was born on March 17, 1920 in Tungipara of Gopalganj.
"Let us pay our solemn respect to the greatest Bangalee of all times Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman through a special discussion in parliament on his colorful political and work life and philosophy on the occasion of Mujib Borsho celebration, marking his birth centenary in 2020," said the leader of the House.
Participating in the discussion, senior Awami League lawmaker Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said although Bangabandhu couldn't turn the country into "Golden Bengal" as he was assassinated on August 15, 1975, his dream is being fulfilled now as his daughter is alive.
Harunur Rashid of BNP from Chapainawabganj-3 said rape, corruption and plundering have increased greatly in the country due to a lack of rule of law.
"The rules of the constitution must be followed to this end. Bangabandhu did not disrespect and ridicule any opposition leader," he said.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal's Hasanul Haq Inu, AL's AFM Ruhal Haque, and AKM Bahauddin, and Jatiya Party's Shamim Haider Patwari, among others, also took part in the discussion.
