HT Imam no more

Prime minister's political adviser HT Imam died early today at a city hospital.

He was 82.

He died around 1:15 am today at the Combined Military Hospital, prime minister's Special Secretary Biplab Barua has confirmed.

Imam was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago with multiple complications, including kidney diseases.

The details of his burial will be announced later, said Barua, also an office secretary of the Awami League.

Hossain Toufique Imam, better known as HT Imam, was also a co-chairman of the AL election steering committee for the last national polls.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at his death.

Imam has been serving as the political adviser to the premier since 2014.

Born on January 15, 1939, he completed his undergraduate in economics at Rajshahi University and graduated in economics at Dhaka University. He then obtained a postgraduate degree in development administration at London School of Economics.

In 1962, he joined the then Pakistan Civil Service. He served as the cabinet secretary to the Government of Bangladesh during the Liberation War.
