Five members of a family, including a three-year-old girl, were burnt to death at their home in Moulvibazar town yesterday morning.

The family used to live on the top floor of a two-storey building that had a market on the ground floor.

Abdullah Harun, deputy assistant director of Moulvibazar Fire Service, said the fire might have originated from a leakage in the gas line of a footwear outlet on the ground floor of the building.

The fire broke out around 10:45am and rapidly engulfed the building. After two hours of tireless effort, the fire fighters managed to take the blaze under control around 12:30pm, he added.

Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Moulvibazar Police Station, said they recovered the bodies and sent those to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies.

The dead are Subash Roy, 65, owner of the footwear outlet; his daughter Priya Roy, 19; his sister-in-law Dipti Roy, 48; his brother-in-law’s wife Dipa Roy, 35; and Dipa’s daughter Boishakhi Roy, 3.
