ASI held for raping woman quarantine

An assistant sub-inspector of police was arrested in Khulna yesterday for raping a woman while she was under institutional quarantine on her return from India.

ASI Mokhlesur Rahman was held after the woman, 22, filed a rape case against him with Khulna Sadar Police Station yesterday, said police sources.

The sources said the woman alleged that she was raped in the quarantine centre set up at Primary Training Institute in Khulna on May 14 after she was taken there for her 14-day quarantine on her return from India on May 4.

The accused was on duty at the centre, Md Anwar Hossain, deputy commissioner (south) of Khulna Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star

He confirmed that the ASI was arrested and said investigation was underway.

Meanwhile, a district court sent the accused to jail after he was produced before it yesterday.

The district administration has formed a four-member committee, led by an additional district magistrate, to investigate the matter.
