The female MP taken to hospital

Some Awami League and Jubo League men allegedly assaulted party lawmaker Amatul Kibria Keya Chowdhury during a programme in Bahubal upazila of Habiganj yesterday evening over filming the event.

Later, the lawmaker fell unconscious while describing the incident at a roadside rally in the upazila's Mirpur area. She was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Hamidul Karim, deputy director of Habiganj social welfare office, said the MP (women's reserved seat-28) attended a programme in Mirpur, marking the distribution of cheques and allowance cards among the elderly people from the Bede (gypsy) community in Mirpur. After the programme, the lawmaker visited the nearby Bede village.

Waliur Rahman, president of Bahubal Jubo League, said Upazila Vice-Chairman Tara Miah's driver along with some other people misbehaved with the MP and assaulted her at the card distribution programme. They also filmed the incident.

As the MP asked them why they were filming the programme, they started shouting at the lawmaker, added Waliur, who was present there.

Tara Mia, a Jubo League leader, and Habiganj District Council member Alaur Rahman, a local AL leader, misbehaved with Amatul, said witnesses.

Talking to this correspondent, the lawmaker said Tara Mia along with his driver and several other people attacked her during the card distribution programme which left several people injured.

Brig Gen AK Mahbubul Haque, director of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said there was no injury marks on the lawmaker's body and she was out of danger.

Despite repeated attempts, this correspondent could not reach Tara Miah over the phone for comment.
