'Human Bridge': Arrest warrant issued for UZ chairman

A court here yesterday issued an arrest warrant for Haimchar upazila Chairman Nur Hossain Patowary in a case over walking on a “human bridge” formed by schoolchildren.

The judicial magistrate of Chandpur issued the warrant as Nur Hossain, also the general secretary of Haimchar Awami League, failed to appear before the court.

On January 30, some students of Nilkamal Osmania High School made a symbolic “Padma Bridge” joining their hands on the occasion of the annual sports day of the school. The upazila chairman, who attended the programme as the chief guest, walked over the bridge.

Video footage and images of the incident went viral on Facebook, drawing huge criticism from across the country.

Earlier, the accused had secured bail from the High Court. But the Supreme Court cancelled his bail and ordered him to surrender before the lower court within four weeks.
