Boy's fingers severed over trifle

An influential local stabbed a child's hand and severed his fingers after he mistakenly damaged a portion of a dam at the Moynakhali embankment of Tahir upazila's Mohalia Haor yesterday afternoon.

The child, Yahin Miha, of the upazila's Sulemanpur village in Sunamganj, and a class two student of Sulemanpur Dakhil Madrasah, went to collect fodder and mistakenly walked into the newly constructed embankment of Mohalia Haor.

When the boy suddenly slipped off the cliff, a portion of the dam was destroyed.

As a result, Odud Miah, an influential local and president of No. 28 Project Implementation Committee of Moynakhali Embankment of Tahir upazila's Mohalia Haor, decided to punish the boy on the spot. He took the child's sickle, stabbed his right hand and severed three of his fingers.

Dilraj Begum, Yahin's mother, said that Odud punished Yahin by beating him and stabbing his right hand after accusing him of “destroying the dam”.

Yahin's father, Shahanur Miah, said that when the bleeding did not stop, they had to take the child to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital that night, where Yahin is currently taking treatment.

Meanwhile, locals and witnesses informed the police about the incident.

Officer-in-Charge of Tahirpur Police Station, Nandan Kanti Dhar said Odud is now on the run.

Dr Benjamin, medical officer of Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, said that severe injury in Yahin's index, middle and ring finger has been repaired at the hospital.

OC said the family was yet to file a case, but the police are trying to arrest the accused.
