Aman, Alam among 3 BNP leaders held

Law enforcers yesterday arrested three senior BNP leaders Amanullah Aman, Nazimuddin Alam and ABM Mosharraf Hossain in the capital's Mohakhali DOHS and Uttara.

Aman, a vice-chairman of BNP, and Alam, a member of the party's executive committee, were detained around 9:00pm over the attack on policemen and vandalism of a prison van in the Supreme Court area on Tuesday, Lt Col Sarwar-Bin-Quasem, commanding officer of Rab-1, told The Daily Star.

Alam was holding a meeting with Aman at his home at Mohakhali DOHS, said Shamsuddin Didar, a member of BNP chairperson media wing.

Police arrested Mosharraf, training affairs secretary of BNP, in Uttara when he was returning to the capital from Tongi yesterday afternoon, reports UNB.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told UNB that plainclothes policemen detained Mosharraf around 4:30pm.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said they began a drive to arrest those who had carried out the attack and those who had been behind the scene.

On Thursday, former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal president Azizul Bari Helal and 60 others were placed on remand for five days in three cases filed with Ramna and Shahbagh police stations for assaulting police and vandalising the prison van.

The previous day, a Dhaka court sent BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy to jail and granted remand for 54 others after they were produced before the court.

They were arrested as part of a police crackdown on BNP leaders and activists. The drive was launched after BNP activists attacked police and snatched two fellow activists from a prison van in the Supreme Court area on Tuesday.

Several hundred BNP leaders and activists were accompanying a motorcade of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia while she was returning home after appearing before a court at Bakshibazar in a corruption case.

Top BNP leaders accused in the cases include Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Shawkat Mahmud, Asaduzzaman Ripon, Zainul Abedin Faruk, Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and Shyama Obayed.
