AL bags most of councillor posts

The ruling Awami League-backed candidates won most of the councillor posts in Tuesday's city polls.

Out of 90 councillor posts in two city corporations in Dhaka, the AL favourites won 57. In Chittagong, 35 AL-blessed councillor hopefuls became winners, according to the Election Commission.

The results of three wards in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have been suspended.

Of the 57 winners backed by the AL, 38 won in DSCC while 19 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

Eight councillor candidates blessed by the BNP won in Dhaka though the party pulled out from elections midway through the polling day. Of the eight, six won in DSCC while two in DNCC.

Five councillor hopefuls backed by the BNP and one by the Jamaat-e-Islami came out victorious in Chittagong City Corporation polls, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

Many BNP-backed councillor contenders could not campaign as they were facing cases filed in the last three years in connection with street agitations.

As the BNP boycotted the polls, questions have been raised whether its favourites would take oath of office.

“People gave me the mandate. I will discharge my duties sincerely. I will go everywhere to discharge my duties,” said Golam Hossain, a member of BNP Dhaka city (south) unit. He won in ward-4.
