Akram Killing: Teknaf AL to call for probe

The Teknaf Upazila Awami League is likely to urge the prime minister and the home minister to launch an investigation to find out whether local MP Abdur Rahman Bodi played any role in the killing of municipality councilor Akramul Haque.

AL leaders in the upazila may convey their grave concern to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal over the killing.

“An emergency working committee meeting of Teknaf Upazila Awami League will be held on June 6 [tomorrow] where we will discuss several issues, including the killing of dedicated and tested Awami League leader Akram,” Mohammad Ali, president of Teknaf upazila AL, told The Daily Star yesterday.

Ali also said AL leaders would send a resolution to the Prime Minister's Office and home ministry mentioning that Akram was killed based on a faulty list of drug peddlers. 

“We strongly believe Akram's name might be included in the drug dealers' list as part of a conspiracy,” said another local AL leader wishing anonymity.

Mohammad Ali added that he would urge the PMO and home ministry to correct the list of drug dealers, their patrons and godfathers in Teknaf.

Mohammad Alam Bahadur, general secretary of Teknaf municipality AL, said AL leaders of the municipality would hold another meeting next Friday to discuss the issue.

“We want the ongoing drive against drugs to be a success. But killing innocent people like Akram will eclipse all the success,” he said. 

Meanwhile, Akram's wife Ayesha Begum told The Daily Star that a person claiming to be an official of the PMO had called her and enquired about the killing of her husband.

Teknaf poura councillor Akramul Haque was killed in what Rab claimed was a gunfight between the elite force and drug dealers in Cox's Bazar on May 27.

Ayesha, however, alleged at a press conference at Cox's Bazar Press Club on Thursday that her husband was murdered in cold blood. She gave journalists four unverified audio clips of chilling conversations in support of her claim.

Ayesha earlier said she was planning to write a letter to the PM seeking justice.

Rab on Sunday formed an internal probe committee to investigate the alleged murder, Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of Rab's Legal and Media wing told The Daily Star.

The elite force formed the committee amid widespread criticism over the incident.
