Two missing youths contacted families

Two of them contacted their families before leaving home for unknown reason

At least two of the nine youths, who disappeared in the last couple of weeks, have contacted their families but haven't mentioned why they went away.

Of the two, Niamatullah, 16, a madrasa student in Barisal's Agailjhara upazila, sent a message to his mother's mobile phone on December 3, three days after he had gone missing. He asked his mother not to worry about him.

The other youth, Tanvir Ahmed, 21, a third-year student of Pabna Medical College, called his father Nur Alam, a government employee in Rangpur, on November 30 and told him not to look for him.

He went missing from the college campus the same day, said Abdur Razzak, officer-in-charge of Pabna Police Station.

The following day, Tanvir's childhood friend and classmate Zakir Hossain, 22, disappeared on his way to Pabna from his house in Rangpur, the OC told The Daily Star.

Zakir, son of freedom fighter Md Suruzzaman, is the organising secretary of Pabna Medical College unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, said Sourav Hassan, secretary of the BCL unit.

Riazul Haque, principal of the medical college, said the sudden disappearance of the two caused worries among his students.

On December 1, the college authorities filed a general diary with Pabna Police Station about Tanvir's disappearance, while Zakir's family lodged a GD with Kaunia Police Station in Rangpur.

Razzak said, “Tanvir went out of the college campus on November 30 after his exams. Over the phone, he told his father not to look for him. He, however, didn't say where he was going.”

Abdul Kader Zilani, OC of Kaunia Police Station, said Zakir's father filed a GD with them on December 4.

Police say Tanvir switched on his cell phone and logged into his Facebook account once or twice.

“We suspect that both of them may have links with militant groups. We are investigating the matter,” OC Razzak told our Pabna correspondent.

Apart from the three, six youths went missing in the capital between November 29 and December 5. Their sudden disappearance has caused serious concern to their families, given that the Holey Artisan Bakery attackers and many other militant suspects disappeared in a similar fashion.

GOVT EMPLOYEE GOES MISSING

Ahsan Habib, staff of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board, went missing after he left his house in the capital on November 14, telling his wife Monsura Begum that he was going to his village home in Dinajpur.

Monsura filed a GD with Motijheel Police Station on December 5, mentioning that her husband didn't show up at his village home. Both his mobile phones had been unreachable since he left the house in the capital, said Motijheel police.

Sub-inspector Nasiruddin, who is looking into the matter, said they were trying to trace Ahsan, and that his photos were sent to police stations across the country.

MISSING MADRASA STUDENT

Niamatullah, 16, son of Khorshed Bepari in Bakal village of Barisal, went missing on November 30.

Khorshed lodged a GD with Agailjhara Police Station on December 3, about the disappearance of his son, a student of Al-Jamiatul Nasisia Al Islamia Markas Madrasa.

Agailjhara police said Niamatullah sent a message to his mother's mobile phone, and told her to forgive him and not to worry about him.

Mufti Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, principal of the madrasa, said Niamatullah got admitted to the institution two years ago.

Niamatullah argued with his father over the phone on November 29, and went out of the madrasa following the altercation, he said.

Sahadat Hossain, sub-inspector of Agailjhara Police Station, said they had not yet found his links with militancy.
