Fresh abduction sparks protest in Narayanganj

Cops foil protests as ultimatum ends

Law enforcers reportedly fired blank shots, tear-shells and charged batons to disperse agitating people who went on blocking at Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Narayanganj this evening protesting abduction of a businessman.

Locals of Siddhirganj upazila around 6:00pm went to Sanarpard to block the highway as their ultimatum to the law enforcers to rescue abductee Saiful Islam by the evening ended without any positive outcome, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

Police however denied “blank fire” on the protesters.

Earlier, after the body recovery of seven abductees in Narayanganj, a businessman has been kidnapped sparking fresh street protests in the district.

Locals had issued an ultimatum till this evening to the law enforcing agencies to rescue the abducted businessman.

Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Chittagong highway remained suspended for an hour till 1:00pm as locals put barricades at different points protesting the abduction.

Saiful Islam, 35, went out of his Siddhirganj residence on business purpose around 9:00pm yesterday.

Since then, he remains missing, said Md Zakaria, addition superintendent of police in Narayanganj quoting the victim's relatives.

A missing complaint was lodged with Siddhirganj Police Station this morning, said Abdul Matin, officer-in-charge of the police station.

The victim’s family however claimed that the kidnappers have demanded Tk 10 lakh as ransom over mobile phone in the morning.

As the abduction news spread in the city in the morning, several hundred people took to the streets in Sanarpard area at noon demanding immediate rescue of the “kidnapped” businessman.

The agitators freed the highway around 1:00pm after issuing an ultimatum to the law enforcing agencies.

They threatened to go for a tougher movement if the law enforcers fail to rescue Saiful by this evening.

The bodies of Narayanganj city councillor Nazrul Islam, senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar and five others were found floating in the Shitalakkhya river on Wednesday and Thursday.

They were kidnapped in broad daylight in Narayanganj on Sunday.
