The body of Nayar Sultana, who played Tuni, a young girl in the popular drama serial "Ei Shob Din Ratri" on Bangladesh Television, was recovered from her house at the capital's Gulshan on Thursday night.

On information from her mother Razia Sultana, police reached the spot around 7:00pm and found the door of Nayar's room locked from inside, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station.

Later, police broke open the door and found Nayar hanging from a ceiling fan with a piece of cloth, the OC added.

The body of Nayar, 35, was immediately sent to Dhaka Medical College Morgue for an autopsy. Morgue sources said she committed suicide.

She left behind two minor daughters.

Her husband Al-Amin was arrested a few hours after the incident as Razia lodged a murder case with Gulshan police against him, bringing allegation that he provoked Sultana to commit suicide.

Nayar's marital life was not peaceful due to their disagreement over different issues, police said quoting the case statement.

Razia claimed Al-Amin was a drug addict and beat Nayar up on several occasions.

She further claimed, he strangled her daughter and then hung her from the ceiling and fled on Thursday.

However, the 20-year-old domestic help, upon quizzing by police, could not say if any brawl took place before the incident.

Meanwhile, Al-Amin refuted the claim of alleged murder and torture during primary interrogation. When asked why he was not at home after the incident, he said he brought his children home and went out as usual, said police.

Police sources said Razia yesterday sought bail for Al-Amin, citing the reason of the children's well-being. She also said the family suspected it was a suicide.

The court, however, did not grant Al-Amin the bail and sent him to jail.

The OC said they were investigating the case.

In the 1990s, BTV serial "Ei Shob Din Ratri" by the now dead popular writer Humayun Ahmed ended in Tuni's death.

The death of the young girl took the country by storm as many viewers of the serial requested Humayun to save the character Tuni, who was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, but Humayun stuck to his plot.
