Form body to probe Narayanganj murders: NHRC

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has requested the home ministry to form a three-member committee in the next 24 hours with a retired judge as its head to investigate the seven-murder in Narayanganj.

In the letter submitted to the home ministry yesterday, the NHRC has called for appointing a retired senior police officer and a prominent human rights activist as the members of the committee.

The home ministry has also been requested to inform the commission in the next 24 hours about the formation of the committee.

Seven people including Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar and five others were abducted from Narayanganj city on April 27. Six of their bodies were found floating in Shitalakkhya river April 29 while another on the following day.

The NHRC sent the letter to the home ministry a day after its Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman threatened to go to the court, seeking directives if the government fails to stop abductions and secret killings immediately.
