The first day of summer, somewhat similar to spring, does not go unnoticed. All of Dhaka, if not the country as a whole, bursts into a fun fare celebrating the coming of a New Year, the coming of a new season, summer!
The grandeur of the event begins at the crack of dawn when people in large numbers flock to Ramna to enjoy the musical soiree. What was once a political statement, defiant of cultural aggression, has in the last 50 years turned into a landmark in our cultural identity.
But there is another side of summer days; a somber side that despite the lack of glamour stands out. Summer in the city may seem unbearable but it has a shade of colour amongst the apparent grey.
