A ferry carrying seven goods-laden trucks capsized in Madhumati river near a ferry terminal in Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj early today.

Hundreds of buses, trucks and other transports were seen waiting both sides of the river as the ferry services remain suspended following the accident.

Soon after the ferry anchored at Kalna terminal, it sank in the river along with a portion of pontoon around 4:30am, reports our Gopalganj correspondent.

“The ferry, which is in dilapidated condition, was overloaded that might be the reason behind the capsize,” said Mojammel Haque, sub-divisional engineer of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).

A rescue vessel has already started for the scene from Barisal to salvage the ferry.

No casualties were reported in this connection.
