Female councillor detained over 7-murder

This Star photo shows locals gather on the back of the Shitalakkhya river to see recovery of the bodies of Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others.

Police today picked up Narayanganj city ward councillor Jannatul Ferdous Nila in connection with the seven-murder.

Nila is known to be a girl friend of Nur Hossain, the prime accused of the abduction and killing of the city’s panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others.

Law enforcers detained Nila around 5:30pm as she was returning from the Narayanganj Circuit House after attending a mass hearing on the murders.

Nila was later freed around 7:30pm, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

A probe committee headed by Md Shahjahan Ali Mollah, additional secretary of the public administration ministry, today recorded the statement of Nila along with 16 other people on the crime.

The high-powered body has been formed in line with a High Court on May 5.

On April 27, seven people -- Nazrul Islam and his four associates and Chandan Sarker and his driver -- were kidnapped separately, but around the same time from the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road.

Six bodies were found in the Shitalakkhya river three days later and another the next day.
