Father, daughter have legs amputated after Bogura road accident

Son also likely to go through same ordeal

A man and his daughter went through surgery to have their right legs amputated after they were severely injured in a road accident in Bogura's Shajahanpur upazila today.

The man's son also sustained similar injuries and may have to undergo the same urgery to get his leg amputated as well, reports our Bogura correspondent quoting doctors.

The victims are: Md Liton Mondol, 35, his daughter Namia, 7, and son Asif, 12.

The incident took place at Aria Bazar area in the upazila on Dhaka-Rangpur highway around 9:00am when a truck hit Liton's motorcycle coming from the opposite direction, leaving the man and his children, who were on the motorbike along with him, critically injured as the truck ran over their legs, said Saiful Islam, inspector of Kundarhaat highway police out-post.

They were rushed to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where Liton and his daughter's right legs had to be amputated up to the knee, said Abdul Wadud, assistant director of the hospital.

"We conducted the surgery on Liton and his daughter from 12:00pm to 3:00pm today and amputated their right legs. Liton's son's leg is also severely injured and may have to be amputated as well," said Dr Rezaul Alam, head of the hospital's orthopedic department.

Meanwhile, locals managed to stop the truck and detained its driver, later handing him over to Shajahanpur Police Station, said Inspector Saiful Islam, adding that a case against the driver in this connection was being filed.
