Family meets Kamaruzzaman

Health condition of death row convict Muhammad Kamaruzzaman is sound, his son Hasan Iqbal said after meeting with his father at Dhaka Central Jail this morning.
“He is not worried about the verdict…I haven’t seen such a strong person like him”, he told The Daily Star.
Ten family members went to the jail in the morning and met the Jamaat-e-Islami leader, who was shifted to Dhaka from Kashimpur jail in Gazipur yesterday, for half an hour from 10:38am with the permission of the jail authorities.
Kamaruzzaman’s wife Nurunnahar, sons Hasan Iqbal, Ahmed Hasan, Ikram Hasan and Hasan Imam, daughter Atia Nur, brothers Naziruzzaman and Abdullah Al Mahadi, sister Mohsina Begum, and nephew Abdul Alim, are among the family members who visited him at the jail.
Shishir Manir, a counsel for the convicted war criminal, said, “The jail authorities did not call the family member. They met him as part of the regular meeting”.

Asked about Kamaruzzaman’s health conditions, the counsel said Kamaruzaman is in good health.
He further told the reporters that they will file a review petition within 30 days after receiving the full text of the Supreme Court verdict.
The death row convict was transferred to the Jail from Kashimpur jail in Gazipur around 2:30pm yesterday, a day into the Supreme Court verdict that upheld his death penalty.
The SC on Monday upheld the death penalty for him as a war crimes tribunal awarded him the capital punishment a year and a half ago.
The apex court verdict has paved the way for execution of the Jamaat leader, a key organiser of the infamous Al-Badr Bahini responsible for abducting, torturing and killing freedom fighters, intellectuals and pro-liberation people in 1971.
