BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has secured bail today but he had to go back to jail as a lower court rejected his bail prayer in two murder cases.

A HC bench granted ad-interim bail to Fakhrul for six months in a case filed with Ramna Police Station on January 3 under explosives act for blasting a bomb on a passenger bus in Paribagh area of the capital.

The driver of the bus named Babul who had sustained serious burn injuries in the incident died after few days, said Md Bashir Ullah, deputy attorney general.

The HC bench of Justice MR Hasan and Justice Mohammad Ullah also issued a rule upon the government why Fakhrul should not be granted regular bail in the case.

The court asked the defence lawyers to take steps so that the rule is disposed of in six months saying that his bail will not be extended further.

Meanwhile, Fakhrul was granted bail in a case filed for killing a police constable while denied bail in two other murder cases.

The cases were filed with Shahbagh and Ramna police stations on November 28 and 30 and December 24.

Ferdaus Khalil, a traffic constable, was killed and two were injured as arsonists set fire to a police requisitioned bus at Bangla Motor in the capital on December 24.

In the cases, Fakhrul is charged with provoking terrorism and arson attacks on buses during BNP's agitation programme in the capital.

The cases later changed to murder cases after seven victims of violence, including a police, had succumbed to their injuries.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rezaul Islam of Dhaka passed the order after defence submitted their arguments on the three separate bail petitions in presence of Fakhrul.
