Detectives pressed charges against 29 BNP men including its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Moudud Ahmed in a case filed for blasting bomb, assaulting police and preventing them to discharge duties last year.

Fazlur Rahman, an inspector of Detective Branch of police and also investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrates in Dhaka today.

The IO filed an appeal to the court for issuing arrest warrant against eight out of the 29 BNP leaders and activists.

The charge-sheeted accused includes BNP standing committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Mirza Abbas; joint secretary generals Barakatullah Bulu and Amanullah Aman; and BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman.

BNP leaders Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anne, Jobo Dal President Moazzam Hossain Alal, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Abdul Quader Bhuiyan Jewel, former JCD presidents Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and Azizul Bari Helal are among the other accused.

Of them, 21 BNP leaders and activists including Fakhrul and Moudud have secured bail for different terms.

The rest eight BNP leaders and activists went into hiding after the case was filed.

Police filed the case against the 29 BNP men and 1,200 unknown persons accusing them of preventing police from discharging their duties, attempting to kill police, blasting crude bombs for creating panic in Shantinagar and Malibagh areas of the capital on March 2, 2013.
