Individuals who were concerned of Dhaka-based British journalist David Bergman’s conviction in a contempt charge against a war crimes tribunal will now have to clarify their say.

All those who gave out the statement of concern will have to clarify their statement by January 27, Mustafizur Rahman, registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), told reporters at a press briefing in Dhaka this afternoon.

They will have to file their explanation with the ICT through their lawyers or by self.

A total of 50 eminent individuals of the society had issued a note of concern after the conviction of David Bergman for demeaning the war crimes tribunal through blog posts. Later, Khushi Kabir, a women leader for rights, pulled out her statement.

David Bergman, a journalist working currently for the daily New Age, was imprisoned inside the court until day’s hearing for December 2 and fined Tk 5,000 after conviction.

The conviction drew global concern over freedom of speech.

A total of 11 among the 49 individuals who issued a note of concern over Bergman’s conviction are now living abroad, ICT Registrar Mustafiz said. “They will have to move their explanation through the Bangladesh mssion in abroad.”

Further orders in this regard will be given afterwards, he said.
