Expat BNP leader, driver missing

An expatriate BNP leader along with his car and driver went missing in Sunamganj on Sunday afternoon.
Mujibur Rahman, 56, former vice-president of Sunamganj unit and the UK chapter of the BNP, went missing along with his driver Rezaul Haque Sohel, 30, after he attended the opposition's hunger strike held in Sunamganj town to protest the recent incidents of abduction, killing and forced disappearances, family sources said.
Mujibur's relative Robiul Islam told The Daily Star that he last saw Mujibur at the protest around 4:00pm on Sunday. After he set off for his Shamimabad residence in Sylhet city, both his and his driver's cellphones were found switched off.  
A worried Robiul filed a general diary yesterday morning over their disappearance with Sunamganj Sadar Police Station.
“We are looking into the complaint,” said Officer-in-Charge of the police station Jaan-e-Alam Khan.
Mujibur, a member of the new convening committee of the district, had been in Sylhet for months and went to Sunamganj to see the progress of an under-construction market that he owns, said Robiul, principal of a private college in Sunamganj.
The BNP leader is a UK citizen and his family is currently staying in the UK, he added.  
The incident took place only a week after seven people went missing in Naranyanganj along with the vehicles they were riding in. Their dead bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya river.
Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, through a press release, expressed his concern over the sudden disappearance of Mujibur with his car, Dhaka- Metro gha -27-4698, and driver Rezaul.
"The current fascist rulers have gone so far by eliminating opposition parties and perceptions that abduction, killing and forced disappearances of opposition leaders have become part of their daily activities.
"The rulers are using not only their wings, Chhatra League and Jubo League, in carrying out these executions but have also turned the police and Rab [Rapid Action Battalion] into killing forces," Fakrul said.
