The High Court today asked former chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda to appear before it on June 3 to explain his “derogatory” comments on judiciary.
Huda yesterday told a meeting that there is no rule of law in the country now.
"All constitutional bodies, including the Election Commission and Public Service Commission, as well as the judiciary have been politicised, and incompetent people are getting important posts there," Huda said at the , according to a report published in The Daily Star today.
The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain also issued a contempt of court rule against Huda who came up with the comments at a seminar on political parties and democracy in Bangladesh organised by Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) in the capital.
In the rule, the court asked Huda, who led the EC to hold a widely acceptable national election in December 2008, to explain in two weeks why contempt of court proceeding should not be brought against him for maligning the dignity and honour of the judiciary.
The home secretary, inspector general of police (IGP), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka and officer-in charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station have been made respondents to the rule.
