The railway authorities today resumed their eviction drive along the rail tracks in Malibagh and Moghbazar areas of Dhaka.

The operation officer of Dhaka Railway, Rafiqul Islam, with the help of police and railway staff started demolishing the illegal structures around 9:00am.

This is the third day of eviction drive along the railway lines in the capital after four people died near the rail crossing at Karwan Bazar kitchen market on Thursday.

Scores of makeshift shops and establishments were already removed from the area south of the rail lines from Malibagh to Moghbazar till this noon.

“We will bring down illegal shops and structures on the northern part soon,” Rafiqul Islam told The Daily Star.

On the first day of the drive, around 70 shops by the rail track from the Film Development Corporation (FDC) gate to Tejgaon Railway Station were brought down.

Around 350 makeshift establishments along the rail tracks in the capital's Malibagh and Khilgaon areas were evicted in the second day of the drive.

A divisional estate officer of Bangladesh Railway, Nurunnabi Kabir, told The Daily Star that the drives will continue until the rail tracks are “freed from grabbers.”
