Ershad sued for ‘not submitting’ polls expenses

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad was sued for not submitting the expenditure of his campaigns for January 5 polls in Lalmonirhat-1 constituency to the Election Commission.

Habibur Rahman, the returning officer and also the deputy commissioner in Lalmonirhat filed the case last night.

As per the rules of EC, Ershad did not submit his election expenditure to the district returning officer till Thursday afternoon, said Mahfuzur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station.

The election official also filed a case against the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) candidate Sadekul Islam, who contested from the same constituency, for same reason, the police official told our Lalmonirhat correspondent.

The cases were lodged following the direction of EC, Habibur said.

AKM Mahbubul Alam Mithu, JP member secretary of Lalmonirhat district unit, said Ershad did not join the January 5 elections from 1Lalmonirhat-1 constituency.

Terming the case as for harassing Ershad politically, he said their party chairman, even any of JP men did not campaign for the election.

JSD candidate Sadekul said that he did not submit the election expenditure as he boycotted the election due to ruling party men’s rigging.

Ruling Awami League candidate Motahar Hossain won the polls bagging 1,79,276 votes in the constituency.
