Rare mole rescued in Moulvibazar dies

A rare Himalayan mole rescued from a village in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar on March 9 died of its injuries yesterday.

The tiny black mole succumbed to its injuries yesterday evening, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports quoting Tabibur Rahman, assistant conservator of wildlife management and nature conservation department in Moulvibazar.

The mole was injured while he was being captured by locals. It was receiving treatment at Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation in the upazila.

The body of the mole is being preserved in formalin to be displayed at Lawachara forest department office as it is very rare, reports the correspondent quoting Mihir Kumar Doe, divisional forest officer of wildlife and conservation department of the Forest Department.

It is found in the central and eastern Himalayas usually between an elevation of 1,500 metres and 2,400 metres. It mostly eats earthworms and insects and their larvae, said Sopon Deb Sajal, director of Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation in the upazila.
