DoE Ctg fines PDB Tk 5 lakh for filling up two ponds in Brahmanbaria

Department of Environment (DoE) in Chattogram region has fined Power Development Board (PDB) in Brahmanbaria's Ashuganj Tk 5 lakh for filling up two large ponds to facilitate construction of a residential block.

The fine was imposed on PDB authorities after a hearing at DoE's Khulsi office in the port city, reports our Chattogram correspondent.

In the inspection report, DoE found PDB Ashuganj authorities encroached upon a total of 2.5 lakh cubic feet of two ponds at Sonarampur of Ashuganj upazila, violating the Environment Conservation Act.

Mohammed Moazzom Hossain, director of DoE Chattogram region told the correspondent that the ponds used to be a source of water for local farmers who were affected due to the filling up of water bodies.

PDB was fined Tk 5 lakh and ordered to restore the ponds, he said.

Apart from this, nine other businesses were fined Tk 4.17 lakhs over violation of the Environment Conservation Act.
