Cyclone Yaas: 13 hectares of Jhau garden uprooted in Cox’s Bazar

Thirteen hectares of Jhau garden in Cox's Bazar was uprooted in tidal surge caused by the recent Cyclone Yaas.

Under the influence of Cyclone Yaas, four to five feet high tidal waves hit the Marine drive area. As a result, about three hundred large Jhau trees were uprooted in Kobita Chattar, Diabetic Hospital Point, and Shaibal Point areas, reports our correspondent.

Locals of Cox's Bazar said Jhau trees cover most of the beach area of Cox's Bazar. They protect the locals from natural disasters, balance the environment, and also serve as a tourist attraction.

Fazlul Quader Chowdhury, district president of the Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon demanded new Jhau trees to be planted on the destroyed sites and necessary steps to be taken for their protection.

Md Humayun Kabir, divisional forest officer, Cox's Bazar South Forest Department, said that a total of 23 hectares of forest, including 13 hectares of Jhau gardens, have been destroyed due to the impact of Cyclone Yaas. There are more Jhau trees under the Coastal Forest Department, and work is underway to determine the extent of the total damage, he added.
