20 businesses including shipyard, hospital fined Tk 11.65 lakh for polluting environment

Department of Environment (DoE) of Chattogram region fined 20 businesses including a shipyard, 11 brick kilns and two hospitals a total of Tk 11,65,000 for violating their conditions and polluting environment.

The fine was imposed after a hearing at the DoE office in Khulshi area of the port city.

Master and Brother Shipyard in Sitakunda upazila was fined Tk 20,000 and Banaful and Company was fined Tk 1 lakh for operating without ETP (effluent treatment plant), said Mohammad Moazzom Hossain, director of DoE Chattogram region told The Daily Star.

Apart from this, 11 brick kilns from Cox's Bazar, Noakhali, Bramhanbaria, and Laxmipur district were fined a total of Tk 8,60,000 for violating different laws associated with operation of brick kiln, he said.

City Hospital in Maizdi of Noakhali was fined Tk 1 lakh and Laksam General Hospital in Cumilla was fined Tk 20,000, he added.

Other than these, Yousuf Chemical, an auto rice mill and Moni Cable were fined Tk 65,000 for breaking DoE clearance conditions.
