12 sentenced to jail, one fined for illegal sand lifting in Tangail

A mobile court sentenced 12 people to three days' imprisonment today and fined another Tk 1 lakh for lifting sand illegally from Dhaleswari river at Kalihati upazila of Tangail.

Executive Magistrate Kamrul Islam, also assistant commissioner (Land) in Kalihati upazila, passed the order under Balu Mohal O Mati Babosthapona Ain (Sand Fields and Soil Management Act), 2010.

An excavator and three trucks were also seized from the spot, reports our Tangail correspondent.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Ershadur Rahman, also the acting commander of Crime Prevention Company-3 of Rab-12, told The Daily Star that the mobile court team, acting on a tip-off, went to Dhaleswari river around 1:30am and detained 13 people when they were lifting sand illegally.

As they failed to show any valid documents, the magistrate punished the 13 sand lifters and sent them to jail, the police official said.
