Fresh gas reserves found in abandoned Sylhet well

Sylhet Gas Fields Ltd has discovered fresh gas reserves at an abandoned well in Beanibazar.

The state-owned company is hopeful of supplying seven to eight million cubic feet of gas and 100 barrels of condensate daily from this well.

Engineer Md Shahinur Rahman, managing director of Sylhet Gas Fields, said, "The testing of Beanibazar-1 well has started today. The presence of gas has been confirmed by testing …  the test shows some 10 million cubic feet gas flow at 3,100 pH pressure."

The well was declared abandoned in 2016 after extracting 35 billion cubic feet of gas from 3,450 meters of depth. Sylhet Gas Fields started the workover of the well on September 10.

"Testing in the well will continue for the next three days … It seems that around 7 to 8 million cubic feet of gas and about 100 barrels of condensate can be supplied daily from the well," the Sylhet Gas Fields MD said.

Mentioning that it was imperative in the current context, he said, "A 3D seismic survey project has been taken for Beanibazar upazila. If the project is completed by 2023-24, plans to dig new wells will be taken up."

"Of the abandoned gas wells under Sylhet Gas Fields, four wells -- Kailashtila-2, Rashidpur-2, Rashidpur-5 and Haripur-7 -- are planned for workover on a priority basis. The workover of these four wells will start by the end of 2023 and we see bright prospects of fresh gas reserve in these wells," he said.
