Low-lying areas of Habiganj city are inundated – causing immense people suffering – due to the incessant heavy rains, onrush of water from the hills and rising water in the rivers.

The district administration said water level in the Kalni and Kushiyara rivers of Habiganj are also flowing above the danger level, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.

The local administration said that they have kept every shelter ready for flood victims.

Low-lying areas of the district have been flooded while houses, mosques, temples, roads have been submerged. Many educational institutions have been closed.

Several areas of Habiganj town went under knee-deep water due to heavy rains over the last two days that disrupted the road communication. Water has entered hundreds of shops and houses.

The district's Circuit House, the Water Development Board, the residences of the superintendent of police and deputy commissioner and the office of Public Works department are under water, said Sajjad Mia, resident of Shaistanagar of the district.

Locals say during heavy rains, the whole Habiganj town remains waterlogged for a long time.

This long-term problem will persist if the drainage system here is not developed, they said.

Locals cannot move due to the waterlogging. Boats were seen plying on the roads along with vehicles. The goods of small traders are being washed away from the footpaths.

Knee-deep water was seen at North Shyamali, South Shyamali, Gosainagar, Circuit House Road, Mahmudabad, Garning Park and a few other areas of the city.

Warish Mia, a farmer from Ajmeriganj upazila, said the water in the river is increasing every day.

"Water has already reached the front yard of my house. If the water continues to rise like this for a few days, there is a risk of fresh flooding," he said.

Mintu Chowdhury, additional deputy commissioner of Habiganj district, said the water of Kalni and Kushiyara rivers is flowing above the danger level.

"Every flood shelter in the haor areas has been kept ready," he informed.
