Nor’westers leave 4 dead in 3 districts

At least four persons were killed as nor'westers lashed Barishal, Chattogram and Manikganj districts this (April 20, 2022) morning.

In Barishal, Rustam Ali Hawlader and his daughter-in-law Jaynab Bibi were killed on the spot when a mud house collapsed on them at Gaguria village of Alimabad union in Mehendiganj upazila during the storm, reports our Barishal correspondent quoting Md Nurunnabi, upazila nirbahi officer of the upazila.

They were residents of Sreepur area of the upazila, he said.

In Chattogram, a housewife was killed when a tree fell on her in Fatikchhari upazila during the storm.

The deceased was identified as Rina Akter (40), hailing from Uttar Kanchannagar in the upazila, our staff correspondent reports from Chattogram.

The incident happened in Jharjhari area when Rina was going to take her cattle in a safe place during the nor'wester. Neighbours rescued her and took her to local upazila health complex. But she was declared dead around 9:30am, said Fatema Zaman, physician at the health complex.

Meanwhile, in Manikganj, a woman died when lightning struck her while working on a field at Rouha village under Daulatpur upazila this morning, our local correspondent reports.

Deceased Firoza Begum (55) was mother of three children.

Khalsi Union Parishad's Chairman Ziaul Haque said, "Firoza suffered injuries when a lightning hit the area around 6:00am. She was badly burnt in lightning."

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Imrul Hasan confirmed the death.
