Sharmila Tagore returns to Bengali cinema after 14 years

Fabled actress Sharmila Tagore is making a much-anticipated comeback to Bengali cinema after a 14-year hiatus. The veteran actor, known for her selective approach to film projects, recently ventured into the world of OTT with the movie "Gulmohar".

Now, she's set to grace the Bengali silver screen once again, having last appeared in a Bengali film in Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's "Antaheen".

Sharmila is set to share the screen with Rituparna Sengupta in the upcoming film "Puratawn", directed by Suman Ghosh.

The film's storyline revolves around an emotional exploration of a mother-daughter relationship, with Sharmila Tagore portraying Mrs. Sen and Rituparna playing her daughter. Indraneil Sengupta joins the ensemble cast as the son-in-law, further adding to the anticipation surrounding the chemistry between Rituparna and Indraneil, who have recently collaborated on a project by Indrasis Acharya.

Sharmila Tagore, a superstar in the 70s and 80s, has been seen less frequently on the big screen in recent years. Her career is studded with blockbuster films like "Aradhana," "Amar Prem" and "Chupke Chupke," leaving an indelible mark on the industry. While she took a step back from mainstream cinema, her influence remained significant.

Regarding her recent role in "Gulmohar", where she starred opposite Manoj Bajpayee, Sharmila emphasized that the character Kusum was "necessary" for her at this stage in her life. Her choices now align more closely with scripts she finds purposeful.
