Remembering Anwar Hossain on his 8th death anniversary

National Award winning actor Anwar Hossain was one of the most celebrated faces in Bangladeshi cinema. Known as the 'Nawab Sirajuddaula' of the silver screen, the actor worked in over 500 films in his illustrious career, spanning over five decades. Today marks the 8th death anniversary of Anwar Hossain.

Born on November 6, 1931 in Shorulia, Jamalpur, Anwar Hossain stepped into acting in his school days with the tele-fiction "Poddokhep". He later shifted to Dhaka in 1957, and he was married to  Nasima Khanam.

He first appeared on the silver screen in 1958 with "Tomar Amar". Balaka Cinema Hall in Dhaka was inaugurated on May 1, 1964 with his film "Dui Diganta".

Eminent playback singer Syed Abdul Hadi was the playback singer for many notable songs of Anwar Hossain, including his National-Award winning song "Achen Amar Mokhtar" from "Golapi Ekhon Traine" (1978). The singer shared his memories with the artiste.

"We shared an amazing bond," he says. "We have shared many memorable moments, times we spent together on the shooting sets, evening gatherings, and times in the BFDC premises. Every time I think of him, his smile flashes in front of my eyes, just like a film."

Anwar Hossain received the National Film Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010. His most memorable works include, "Nawab Sirajuddaula" (1967), "Jibon Theke Neya" (1970), "Jog Biyog" (1970), "Kokho Gocho" (1970), "Dhire Bohe Meghna" (1973)," Devdas" (1982), "Rajlokkhi Shrikanto" (1987), and "Dayi Ke" (1987), among many others.
