History was made at the red carpet event at Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday (May 17) when playback singer Mame Khan became India's first folk artist to walk on it.

Attired in traditional Rajasthani clothes, Khan, who hails from the desert state of Rajasthan, wore a vibrant pink kurta set with an embroidered navy blue jacket and his look was completed with a typical Rajasthani headgear and sunglasses.

Mame Khan is in Cannes as a member of the 11-member official Indian contingent led by Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur at the Cannes Festival.

Khan lent his voice in a number of Bollywood films, including Luck By Chance, I am, No One Killed Jessica, Monsoon Mangoes, Mirziya and Sonchiriya. The singer also featured in an episode of Coke Studio with Amit Trivedi.

Among the other Indian celebrities were composer A R Rahman and actor Nawazuddin Siddique, a regular at Cannes.

Nawaz's raw and powerful acting and the realism of the movies like The Lunchbox and Gangs of Wasseypur have a particular resonance among European audiences.

The presence of A R Rahman in the group reflected India's tribute to cinematographic music.

Showcasing the musical eclecticism of India, different genres were represented on the Cannes red carpet. Ricky Kej, an internationally- acclaimed new age music composer and multi-Grammy Award winner, represented a more contemporary side of the country.

Aishwariya Rai Bachchan, Tamannaah Bhatia, Nayanthara, Pooja Hegde, Deepika Padukone, Hina Khan, Helly Shah were also at the Cannes red carpet to attend the prestigious film festival.
