Although his rise to stardom was a bit slow during the 90s, the actor surely made a space for himself in the indie genre of the Indian film industry. Speaking about his experience in doing independent films on a limited budget, the actor told Mirchi Plus, "I myself had to market my independent movie because there would be no budget."

"Whatever was the budget, it was used to make the film. I have done everything. I have even changed the costumes behind a truck, because there was no van," he remarked.

Comparing the environment between independent and mainstream films, the actor mused that the surroundings are more 'chill' with mainstream films. He added that in mainstream films, when you ask for one drink, you get five, thus they love the environment. For independent films on the other hand, he has also had to stay in three-star hotels instead of five-star ones.

Despite the luxuries, Manoj was quick to admit that his film "Aligarh" brought him fame. The actor has worked in notable cult classics like "Gangs of Wasseypur", "Shootout at Wadala","Farzi", "The Family Man","Raajneeti" and more. The actor will soon be seen in "Bandaa".
