The High Court today directed the government to enforce the Safe Food Act, 2013 through issuing a gazette notification within 15 days in a bid to prevent adulteration of food.

In response to a writ petition, the HC ordered the law secretary to submit a report before it by June 16 after complying with the directive.

A rule has also been issued asking the government to explain why it should not be directed to form an authority to take necessary action to ensure safe food for the citizen.

The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain came up with the order and rule after hearing the writ petition by rights organisation Legal Action Bangladesh Foundation.

On May 18, the rights body filed the writ petition seeking its directive on the government to take necessary steps to ensure safe food for the citizens of the country.

It also prayed requested necessary instructions for the authorities to operate mobile courts against adulteration of food in all cities and metropolitan areas.

The organisation also urged the court to form a committee “Safe Food Authority”, as per the safe food act, to take necessary decisions and action to stop adulteration of food.

It also requested formation of an inquiry committee to find out the reasons behind non-compliance of the act and submit a report in this regard.
