Eight reservoirs change scenario of Char Kukri Mukri

The last lap of the travel to Char Kukri Mukri, the southern most settlement of Bhola, evokes the feelings of a cruise in the Sundarbans. It is also one of the country's largest wildlife sanctuaries.
But this picturesque, sequestered island in Char Fasson upazila is home to 8,000 poor people, who only seven months ago had struggled to meet their nutritional demand due to a lack of an adequate supply of vegetables.
Now they are self-sufficient in production of both vegetables and fish, thanks to the recently excavated eight sweet water reservoirs which are serving the twin purposes.
The 180 beneficiaries who are cultivating fish in the water bodies and vegetables on their banks have not only fulfilled their needs but also those of other islanders and are selling their produce outside. The unique pilot programme of UNDP Bangladesh is funded by the Netherlands.
