Effective investigation so far

Must continue unhindered

The police's search for militants connected to the deadly Gulshan and Sholakia attacks have so far yielded positive results. The latest operation conducted by the police and the follow up investigation after that have brought to the fore some startling revelations. This includes finding links with the militants found in Kallyanpur with those of the Gulshan attack as well as possible identification of the trainers and mentors of these misguided youths.

This paper's investigation with the help of names and addresses provided by the police, has found important insights into the personal history of some of the suspects. According to the reports some of the militants had shown signs of extremism at earlier stages of their life which their families found uncharacteristic. Further digging may give some clue as to how and by whom these youngsters were indoctrinated into militancy.

All this gives us hope that the law enforcement agencies are working hard to find militants and thwart future attacks. It is all the more important that the police can carry out their investigations and operations with utmost fairness and professionalism with no political influence marring their work which, ultimately, is self-defeating. We recall the way political influence made a farce of the investigation of the assassination attempt in 2004 by militants against Sheikh Hasina who was then the leader of the Opposition. Politicisation of such crucial and sensitive investigations only deflect the truth allowing the real culprits to go free. Such a trend gives opportunities for militants to organise, plan and carry out more attacks.

In the present circumstances so rife with fear, rumour-mongering and uncertainty, it is vital for all security agencies to work together to get to the bottom of this scourge without any kind of political considerations.
