The authorities of Dhaka University have decided to suspend three Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and an activist from the university following an allegation of abducting a trader rescued against them.

Meanwhile, BCL has expelled the four activists following the allegation, Siddiqui Najmul Alam, secretary of central BCL, told The Daily Star.

The expelled students are: Srijon Gosh Sajeeb, deputy sports secretary of BCL central unit; Anupom Chandra, vice-president of Jagannath Hall, DU unit and Abdullah Al-Mamun and Himel, welfare secretary and activist of BCL Mohsin Hall respectively. They are now in police custody.

After a meeting, the authorities have decided to suspend them today, DU acting proctor Amzad Ali told The Daily Star.

Police on Friday rescued Farhad Islam, 25, from Jagannath Hall, around 15 hours after he was picked up allegedly by Sajeeb and his cohorts.

Farhad had been held hostage since 9:00pm on Thursday.

The police today produced six men arrested in the case in front of the court.

The six include Arfan Patwari and Bappi besides the four expelled from BCL.

Sub-inspector Shimul Haque Mondol asked for a 5 day remand of Arfan Patwari. Magistrate Finikder Ali Chalroborty granted a 3 day remand for Arfan while the rest were sent to jail.

According to Farhad, his friend Akhter borrowed Tk 5 lakh from Arfan, a childhood friend of Farhad, around six months ago, with Farhad as the guarantor. Akhter was supposed to pay back the money in monthly instalments.

However, Akhter stopped paying the instalment after three months and Arfan asked Farhad to pay the rest of the money from his pocket, Farhad told The Daily Star at Shahbagh Police Station.

On Thursday night, Arfan along with 10 to 15 youths picked him up from Shahbagh, took him to the DU hall and kept him confined to Sajeeb’s room in Govinda Chandra Dev building.

They made Farhad phone his family and ask them to come with Tk 5 lakhs for his release.

Around 12:00noon yesterday, as his family members went to the Central Shaheed Minar area to give the money, police nabbed Arfan.

On Arfan's information, police rescued Farhad from the dormitory, a few hundred yards from the Shaheed Minar, and detained Sajeeb from there.

Farhad claimed that he was beaten up with iron rods and burnt with cigarette butts during his confinement.

Farhad's family has filed a case against Arfan with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection.
