Drive begins to demolish illegal structures at Lalbagh Fort
Department of Archeology has begun demolishing an illegal building inside the historical Lalbagh Fort in Old Dhaka in line with a High Court order that directed its authorities to remove illegal structures in and around the fort to protect its beauty, nature and archaeological heritage in 2011.
“We have begun our drive to demolish the three-storey building owned by DOZ Industries Limited around 11:30am after receiving the copy of 2011 HC verdict,” said Ataur Rahman, regional director of the department.
The department will also go for action against two other buildings there after receiving the copy of HC order, he said.
On March 19 this year, the department directed the Deputy Commissioner to demolish any structure inside the boundary of the centuries-old Moghul palace.
The HC on April 6 issued a contempt of court rule against independent lawmaker Haji Mohammad Selim for obstructing the law enforcers to implement its 2011 directive to protect the architect site.
The court also on April 13 this year asked the cultural affairs secretary and the department director general to show cause for delaying in executing its directive delivered on October 26, 2011.
