Sheer negligence of a Dhaka Medical College Hospital doctor almost led to the burial of a newborn today, alive!

The baby boy, who was born at DMCH early today, became stiff and motionless for some reasons in the morning.

Then the doctor declared him dead without thorough checkup and issued a death certificate, said Masud, an uncle of the infant.

Sultana Akter from Keraniganj, who was admitted to the DMCH maternity ward around 10:00pm yesterday, gave birth to the pre-matured baby around 12:00am. The baby was born around three months early.

As the baby was taken to the Azimpur graveyard for burial, a few students from Shaheed Begum Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Government College saw the baby moving, said Oni Islam, a first-year student of the college.

The newborn was then rushed back to the DMCH Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs).

“Undoubtedly, it was a great mistake. The doctor should not have issued the (death) certificate without proper checkup,” said DMCH Director Brig Gen Mustafizur Rahman.

A four-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the matter, asking it to submit the report within five days, the official added.

When asked, the director did not disclose the name of the responsible doctor.
