Dhanmondi playground open to public: DCC
The Dhanmondi playground is open to public, according to signboards installed there by Dhaka South City Corporation (DCC South) today, days after protests by environmentalists groups.
The notice served by an executive magistrate of DSCC makes clear the announcement that the playground is open to public from now on, Ansar Ali Khan, chief executive officer of the city corporation, told The Daily Star.
“The fresh notice will remove the confusion and anybody who may obstruct public access to the playground will be treated as an offence and will be personally liable,” the DSCC official said.
DCC South authorities this morning installed four signboards on the boundary wall of the playground that reads: "The playground is open to public."
The DCC decision came in the wake of ongoing demonstration by green activists protesting "illegal occupation" of the playground by Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club.
The city corporation authorities are yet to remove half a dozen illegal structures erected inside the playground by the private club, which had been barring people from accessing into the ground for more than a year.
Earlier on Tuesday, the High Court ordered the government not to take any legal action till Sunday against the environmentalists hours after four environmentalists surrendered before a lower court and secured bail in a case filed for protesting occupation of the playground.
The Dhanmondi Club following a demonstration by environmentalists on April 18 filed a case accusing them of creating chaos near the “private property.” The green activists also face charges of entering Dhanmondi playground illegally and hampering construction work.
Four environmentalists -- Mubasshar Hussain, former president of Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB); Iqbal Habib, joint secretary of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon; Kamrunnahar Dana, general secretary of Bangladesh Women's Sports Association, and architect Salma A Shafi – have been made accused in the case.
